target this time. He reloaded the gun, breathing slowly,
allowing his mind to go blank before he squeezed the
trigger. When they examined the target, Evan was
pleased to see that all shots were closer to the human
shape, two having actually hit it.
"One more time," he said. "Just to be sure."
When they finally left the shooting range, Evan was
almost relieved. He had emptied four clips into four
different targets, and except for the first time, he had
actually done well, several of the bullets aiming true.
However, it had left him with mixed emotions. There
was some comfort in knowing that he would be able to
defend the others, if need be. He had always heard that
guns didn't kill people, people killed people.
Nevertheless, guns were certainly deadly, and he
couldn't help the way he felt. He didn't think he would
ever be at ease around them, no matter how long he
worked with Chase.

When they got back to the agency office, Kay and
Toby were sitting behind a desk, heads close together as
they talked excitedly. Chase couldn't help wondering if
there was trouble brewing. They might be his friends,

but truth was, they could wreak more chaos than a five-
year old.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
Kay grinned at him. "Great, boss. Toby found
something real cool about Daniel. Or should I say, one
of Toby's women found something."
"Hey," Toby protested, all injured pride. "I had to
work hard to get the network of informants at my
disposal."
Kay snorted. "The hard part I believe."
"Children, break it up before someone ends up in
tears," Chase quipped.
Evan laughed. "Yeah, 'cause Daddy's not in the
mood," he said, backing away from the mock punch
Chase threw his way.
"Shut up, you," Chase said, although seeing Evan
laugh did weird things to his heart. "What did you find
out about Daniel?"
"Since we didn't get much info regarding Daniel
yesterday, I decided to call my contact at the FBI," Toby
said.
"Who is she, again?" Chase asked, unable to resist
joining in the teasing.
Toby glared at him. "Gisele. As I was saying, I called
Gisele and asked her to do some digging, see if she
could give us anything that might help."
"And did she?" Evan asked.
"I'll say," Toby exclaimed. "Doesn't clear him as a
suspect, but what she told me is certainly to his
advantage. Although at this point we're all pretty sure he
didn't kill Susan, and as far as we know, he didn't have a
motive to kill Kortchmer. Plus, he doesn't sound like the
kind of guy who would beat someone to a pulp when a
bullet would work just as well."
"What did Gisele tell you?" Chase asked impatiently.

"That Daniel's one of the good guys. He's so far
undercover that only a handful of people know about it.
He was recruited right after he finished Quantico. They
set up his cover as a professional hit man, allowing him
to infiltrate drug cartels, terrorist cells, and so on. He
helps identify major players, gets privy to important
information, all because he can move freely in those
circles. Reading between the lines, I figure that when it's
necessary, Daniel's supposed marks disappear, probably
with the help of witness protection." He made a face.
"Or, knowing our government and how these things
work, sometimes they actually get killed."
"Considering the people Daniel must be involved
with, can't say I'd be sorry at that outcome," Kay said.
"Man, I can't even imagine being undercover for
decades, no backup, no familiar faces, nobody he can
trust& Gotta be tough."
Evan slumped into a chair. "Thank God," he said.
"What?" Chase asked with a frown.
"I'm just relieved," Evan replied. "I liked him, Chase.
And you're not supposed to like or empathize with a
psychopathic killer." He brushed his cheek
embarrassedly. "Nice to know I wasn't totally off. I'm
not naïve enough to believe he's squeaky clean, but I can
live with the fact he's doing it for the right reasons." His
forehead furrowed in thought. "I hope. I mean, the guy
has got to be a little unbalanced. I'm not sure a normal
person would go for a job where you're deep undercover
for God knows how long."
"I guess I can understand that." Chase suddenly [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
