Drake. He knew. He'd known the whole time that Adam was there. He had to have, and he still said those things. He'd purposely told Adam about Bailey's feelings for him. How could he? Bailey desperately wanted a hole to open up so he could bury himself in it. This wasn't happening to him. It was all just too insane. Fleeing right now sounded about right. Turning, uncaring about Drake or Keith or Adam or anyone else, Bailey fled outside. He made it to his rental car before the first sob came out. Footsteps scuffed the ground behind him, a familiar scent wafted toward him. We need to talk. Bailey sniffed, not sure he wanted to have this conversation right now. He knew what Adam was going to ask before the other man even opened his mouth. What? You know what. Is it true? Frog legs! Can you please turn around and look at me? Bailey. Adam touched Bailey's arm. He finally swung around, meeting Adam's concerned gaze. Staring at the other man he tried to put what he was feeling into words. He'd had so much happen this past week that it almost seemed unreal. What did he really want? Was Drake right? Were his feelings for Adam nothing more than him needing safety? Knowing that there was no way Adam would go for him even if he was single? They'd been best friends for years and they'd only shared one kiss. Surely more would have happened if they were meant to be. No, he couldn't lie to himself anymore. He didn't love Adam. They definitely weren't mates, and if he was honest, he'd figured that out this weekend. Maybe he'd still think his feelings for Adam were true love if he hadn't met Drake and Keith. What he felt for those two was so huge he almost couldn't describe it. Drake was wrong about one thing, though. He wasn't scared, he was... I'm an idiot. Adam smiled, tilting his head to the side. Yeah, I could have told you that without you having to come out to Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island. Bailey started to laugh, nearly bending double with guffaws when Adam joined in. They ended up holding on to each other, trying to find their breath. Bailey felt like a huge weight had just lifted off his chest. He wasn't in love with Adam. And he was most definitely an idiot. Whatever he just said in there, whether parts of it are true or not... it doesn't matter. You're my best friend, Bailey. I know you. I see you, Adam said. Bailey looked up, finally calming down. I'm sorry you had to hear that. It's not... Doesn't matter. He shouldn't have said it, anyway. What else can you expect from ducks, though, huh? Adam smirked, ducking when Bailey pushed him. He's right. Well, not about that. But, I did come here after you. I figured you did. We're friends. Why wouldn't you come after me? I'm glad you're here. I'm glad you got even a weekend away from your dad. He's exactly like my dad, and it took moving across the country for me to realize I can't please him and never will. Maybe you had to do the same. Yeah, I think you're right. I just don't know what to do now. I... Let me guess... You met them. Bailey nodded, turning and hugging his arms to his chest. I met them. I never thought there were people like that, Adam. I mean, I'm not stupid. I just never expected that they could make me feel the way they did. Do. Everything's different with them. Brighter, shinier, bigger. I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to go home. Not now. Adam skipped around him until they were face to face again. Then don t go home. But, what are you going to do about your dad? I don t know. Call him, I guess. Oh, shoot. I almost forgot. Your parents? Yeah, they re not okay with me mated to a man. Or a wolf. But, my sisters are ecstatic, and Marcus family is great. Trust me, I ll be okay. I m more worried about you right now. You said in your message that your dad said you have to go back. Will you? I can t see doing anything else right now. I can t stay. What would I do? Don't worry about it. Things have a habit of working out around this place. Besides, you have your mates now. They're not going to let you leave, even if you wanted to. Even if the Mallard is a bit unhappy. He'll calm down eventually. Especially if you kiss him better. Adam giggled. Bailey felt his knees turn to jelly. Mates? Adam froze, staring at him. You don't know? Know what? Bailey, come on. I could smell them on you when you first came in here. I was just waiting for you to say something when the duck started all that back there. I figured you knew. No, no no no! They can't be my mates... I couldn't possibly be that blind. How did I-I... oh, man. Bailey was flabbergasted. Mates? You do realize that what you just described is exactly how I feel with Marcus, right? It s the mating urge. They complete you. Their strengths fit your weaknesses and your strengths shore up their weak points. You re meant to be together. Can t you feel it? Chapter Ten Keith barely had time to take all that in before Drake
